The latest race in the BOFRA series travelled to the small village of Cracoe. In the senior race Emma Flanagan couldn't match her win last week at Hawkswick Dash but still finished in a good second place. Elliott Wylie claimed a good second place in the U17 race with relative newcomer Christian Garvey taking 5th. Chloe Law had her best race yet finishing in 6th place only 19 seconds off 4th place.

Mid Lancs Track & Field League, Hyndburn - 24 July 2010

With the track and field season well under way a few of our juniors posted new personal bests today in the latest round of the Mid Lancs League held locally at Hyndburn. In the senior men's competition Jack Stringfellow tried out a new event in the 400 metres and ran very well finishing 2nd in his heat with a respectable time of 59.30secs. Joe Johnston was dissapointed in his performance finishing in 3rd place in the 1500 metres with 4.23.90. Joe Moores was another junior trying out a new event and he finished in 4th place in the U17 men's 1500 metres with 4.24.50. In the U15 boys Alton Fowley had a busy day competing in the 100 metres finishing 4th, 400 metres in 5th and putting in a brave effort in the 800 metres finishing in 11th place. Elliott Weston posted a new personal best in the 100 metres with 12.80 finishing 5th. Connor Richardson posted a new personal best in the U13 800 metres taking second place.

Megan Davies also posted a new personal best in the U15 girl's 1500 metres winning the race. Chloe Law is benefiting from a regular training schedule and posted a new personal best in the javelin finishing in 5th place. In the U13 girl's competition Isabella Lewis ran a great race to finish 3rd in the 800 metres and Shona Monks also had a good race to finish in 4th place in the 1500 metres.

North of England Track & Field League
Rossendale Harriers hosted the second round of the North of England Track & Field Leauge at a very hot and sunny Longford Park, Stretford. In the men's competition Jack Stringfellow and Sam Walsh battled hard in the sprint events against some tough opposition. Joe Moores and Joe Kelly both ran well in the 400 metres but excelled in the 800 metres, Joe M ran full of confidence after smashing his personal best in Tuesday night's Trafford grand prix with 1min 55secs, and although not as fast today he still recorded 1min 58secs to finish 2nd, Joe K also had a great run to easily win the B race in 1min 57secs. Ashley Kay ran close to his best in the 1500 metres finishing with 4mins 08secs in 4th place a great effort after his bad fall on Monday and newcomer to the track Anthony Dalton ran a new personal best in the B race finishing 3rd with 4mins 26secs. Joe Johnston partnered senior Chris Fell in the 5000 metres and ran well to finish 2nd in the B race with 16mins 12secs. As ever our older juniors Phil Bolton and Aaron Barker gained valuable points in the hurdle events and Phil also found the energy to compete in the gruelling 3000 metres steeplechase partnering Jordan Beard and although water jump was taken out which would have brought some relief in the hot conditions both finished in 4th place in their race.

The highlight of the day for the men was the 4x400 metres relay and with some tough opponents Rossendale showed their great team spirit, Joe Moores, Joe Kelly and Aaron Barker ran their legs superbly to hand over to Ashley Kay who managed to hold off a surge from Bolton to bring the team home first with a new personal best time of 3mins 33secs.

The ladies competition was just as tough and Laura Johnston, Sarah Yeomans and Cat Gallagher put in some great performance and hard work to gain valuable points for the ladies. Emma Flanagan put in great performances over the middle distance events competing in the 800, 1500 and 3000 metres earning some good points for the ladies. The ladies 4x400 metres relay team of Sarah Yeomans, Cat Gallagher, Heather Corbishley and Emma Flanagan also put in brilliant effort to finish in 3rd place.

The final result from the match saw Rossendale in 4th place but unfortunately had 16 points deducted which meant we were relegated to 5th place on the day.

Trafford BMC Grand Prix
Joe Kelly set a huge new personal best competing in the BMC grand prix on Saturday. Joe competed in a very competitive 800 metres and not only won the race but knocked a full second off his pb to finish in 1min 56.53secs.

Most of our juniors today competed in the 1500m. In the U20 races both Ashley and Emma were struggling with illness. In the men's race Ashley Kay won a silver medal and produced a new pb with 4mins 07secs, although Ashley was ill on the day he was pleased with his performance and confident for the rest of the track season. Emma Flanagan ran a great race and with 300m to go was in silver medal position but Emma also was struggling with illness but put in a brave effort to finally finish in 4th place with 4mins 47secs very close to her PB. Megan Davies ran well in the U15 girls race with 5mins 00.1 secs, Megan was in silver medal position until 100m to go and was overtaken on the final run in but won a well deserved bronze medal. Rebecca Flanagan who doesn't run many track races aquitted herself well with 9th place in 5mins 22secs. Other performances from our juniors came from Danny Walsh finishing in 12th in the U17 race with 4mins 47secs and Callum Davidson in the U15 boys race with 5mins 14secs.

A great result today by our juniors and even more special for Ashley who saw his team Leeds United promoted to the championship and Jack after watching his team Blackpool win the first leg of their play off and then went on to win a silver medal.

Pennine Bridleway Relay - 31.01.2010
There were mixed fortunes today for our juniors running in the relay. The A team got off to a superb start with pairing of Phil Bolton and Ashley Holt bringing the team in 3rd, Joe Kelly partnered Gareth Jackson on the third leg and he also had a great run, 7th fastest on their leg, keeping the team in 5th place to hand over to the two youngsters of Joe Johnston and Ashley Kay. The pair finished 4th fastest on their leg and kept the team in 5th place, but after a fall from Ashley on the ice and some very ignorant riders and their horses blocking their path coming into the finish, this was a decent time for the pair.
Emma Flanagan and Katie Ireland ran on leg 4 for the Ladies A team and finished fastest ladies on the day with a time of 45.21, nearly a minute faster than their time from last year.
Jordan Beard and Joe Moores had a great run in the B team to finish 7th fastest on their leg, a great result despite Jordan also falling badly on the ice.

The Lancashire Championships were held today on a very snowy Witton Park, Blackburn. All credit to Blackburn Harriers and the marshalls for ensuring a great days racing in such adverse conditions.

Daniel Walsh had a great last lap to finish in 6th place in the U15 boy's event and should recieve a call up to the Lancashire team. In the girl's race Megan Davies was disappointed with her 5th place but she will gain automatic selection into the Lancashire team, Leah Williamson battled hard for 15th place and Nicole Taylor-Lyons finished in 28th place.

In the U17 men's race Joe Moores had the race of his life, more used to track running Joe stormed round the last lap to win a bronze medal and only 6 seconds off 2nd place and gained automatic Lancashire team selection. Joe Johnston had a rare off day finishing in 11th place but after his domination of the Red Rose League should gain a discretionary place on the team. Elliott Wylie had a good race in his first year at this age group to finish in 12th place which helped the boys to a team silver medal.

In the junior races Emma Flanagan was another who gained automatic selection finishing in 4th place in the women's race. In the men's race Ashley Kay ran within the senior race having to endure 4 hard laps of the snow covered Witton Park and ran a great race to finish 21st overall in the race and winning a silver medal in the U20 section he will also gain automatic selection for the inter counties to be held in Birmingham. Phil Bolton struggled slightly with the conditions but he also put in a good performance to finish in 29th place out of 94 runners.

The Inter Counties Championships will be held at Cofton Park, Birmingham on 13 March 2010. Well done to Megan Davies, Joe Moores, Emma Flanagan and Ashley Kay for gaining selection today and with discretionary places up for grabs I am sure there will be a few more juniors named.

Back to today's racing our U11 girls put on another great team performance. Charlotte Waddington had another excellent run to finish in 5th. Jessica Nelson made a massive improvement to finish only 4 seconds later in 6th place. Sophie Murphy was another youngster who has made a massive improvement from the start of the cross country season battling all the way with Shauna Williamson to finish 12th and both being given the same time. In the U11 boy's race Harris Weston was again first harrier home in a great 7th place followed closely by Kieran Lee 10th and Ethan Radcliffe 13th. There were also some great performances from youngsters Harry Stringfellow 18th, Harley Place 22nd, Josh Whitehead 26th, Tom Unsworth 31st, Matthew Tiler 36th and Ben Keeley 37th.

Our U13 boy's put in spirited runs in this tough age group, Connor Richardson 12th, Callum Davidson 14th, Adam Crowder 17th, Nick Magee 28th, Lawrence Adlum 32nd and Jack Tiler 33rd. In the U13 girl's race Megan Solomon had a great run to finish first harrier home in 8th place followed by a great run from Isabella Lewis in 10th with Rebecca Flanagan hot on her heels in 11th which gave the girls overall team honours in the league. They were well backed up by Mollie Neary 28th, Shona Monks 29th, Chloe Law 30th and Manon Dark 32nd.

In the U15 boy's race Danny Walsh showed improvement to finish 6th with Pascal Dark 9th, Alex Rawcliffe 22nd, Alton Fowley 24th. The bravest performance of the day has to go to Luke Waddington who finished 35th, Luke was very proud of himself for finishing his first race on a very tough course. Well done Luke! In the U15 girl's race Megan Davies narrowed the gap on Shannon Johnson from Leigh Harriers by a mere 5 seconds to take 2nd, a super run from Megan. Leah Williamson 9th and Nicole Taylor-Lyons 22nd.

In the U17 men's race Joe Johnston pulled out another outstanding win by 30 seconds followed by Joe Moores putting in a fantastic sprint to the line to take 4th place, they were well backed up by great runs from Elliott Wylie 6th, Anthony Dalton 9th, Jack Stringfellow 13th and Sam Walsh 19th. Emma Flanagan had a great second half to her race finishing 6th overall in the senior race and first junior.

The senior men's race was as competetive as ever with team prizes at stake. Ashley Kay who is the youngest in the race is gaining confidence in the senior ranks and had a great race to finish 5th overall and first Rossendale runner home. Phil Bolton ran a sensible race nursing a slight injury to finish 11th, Joe Kelly didn't seem at his best finishing 17th and Jordan Beard also in his first year in the senior race was feeling unwell on the day but gave a gutsy performance to finish in 25th place.

Well done to all our juniors for putting in great efforts throughout the Red Rose Cross Country league, they have made the coaching team proud.
